Professions in Battlestar Galactica
I've been watching Battlestar Galactica lately--good show. There are reporters on the show, what seems like too many. Considering they are supposed to have around 50,000 people total left in the fleet, I was wondering how many reporters you'd expect.
[Boring Paragraph] Assuming they'd have the same percentage of reporters per capita as we do today in the United States, I went to the Bureau of Labor Statistics's web site to find out how many "News Analysts, Reporters, and Correspondents" there are. That number is 61,200 (median income $40,320). Our total population according to the Census Bureau is about 296,000,000.
Some math (dusting off the calculator) puts the number of reporters at around 10, pretty high actually, and in the future maybe there's more. I hope they don't need 86 lawyers in space. Ouch. Everyone's hair looks pretty good, which justifies the 57 hairstylists.
Now, the Cylons don't seem to have reporters or lawyers, so that may explain why their hair looks even better than the humans'.

Hello!
Just thought I would chime in with a possible answer to your question!
The reason there are so many reporters is because when the Cylon's attacked (in the mini-series), the Galactica crew was in the middle of a decommision ceremony. All those reporters were on board to cover the ceremony... so they all happened to survive.
I think it's funny because they all probably thought it was a crap assignment... little did they know that it would lead to their survival.
